{"id":292,"date":"2009-07-09T20:37:20","date_gmt":"2009-07-09T20:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/zombielapdance\/2009\/07\/09\/food-frakker-mexicanish\/"},"modified":"2012-08-17T05:24:05","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T05:24:05","slug":"food-frakker-mexicanish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/zombielapdance\/2009\/07\/09\/food-frakker-mexicanish\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Frakker: Mexicanish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because my day job is in the food service, I have access to restaurant-grade food products that you miserable mortals can only dream of.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point, this five pound bucket of sour cream and this five pound block of extra-melty super-processed cheese.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/3773377494a564f5956dde.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nYou civilians are probably scratching your heads right now thinking, so? What does that have to do with me?<\/p>\n<p>Well, if you put those two ingredients together, and add some spices, you have the exact recipe of Austin queso.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/5254593664a564f5081500.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThis is the sort of thing you might get if you order Kerbey Queso or queso con carne or some other chips and queso dish at any of Austin&#8217;s finer psuedo-Mexican diners. It has a smooth, creamy, cheesy texture that you can only achieve through proper blending of highly processed and artificial food-like substances.<\/p>\n<p>Of course you can only eat so much queso, and one feels obligated to use up one&#8217;s surplus eight pounds of processed dairy product.<\/p>\n<p>So I made some cheese and macaroni with tomatoes and sardines.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/7782116494a564ef65af01.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nWhich I suppose is something you don&#8217;t see every day.<\/p>\n<p>Then I also made some dip. This started out as spinach and sour cream. And then I thought, what the hell, I have this can of SPAM. What would happen if I threw it in the blender with the rest of the dip?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/1998869014a564f46d854c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nI think I imagined a meaty cloud of SPAM mousse dip. But the SPAM <span style=\"font-style: italic\">completely disappeared into the dip.<\/span> There was no trace of SPAM color, and only the faintest echo of the SPAM taste. <\/p>\n<p>Certainly worth more experimentation, but a disappointing result all the same.<\/p>\n<p>And now to relate some of my recent adventures with the taco carts. <br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/3456986444a56528a64ce3.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nFrom this cart near my house, I decided to break down and be that white guy who orders the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">tripas <\/span>. You know, tacos filled with beef tripe. <br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/6031781524a564f23466a3.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThey were greasy and crisp, and tasted like organ tubules. But in a good way. Hell, in a <span style=\"font-style: italic\">great <\/span>way.<\/p>\n<p>This taco cart sits in the parking lot of a tejano club on the far east side.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/12648898854a564eff7fc4c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nMy friend ordered the al pastor torta. The red meat of the marinated pork is reminiscent of both shawarma and chicken tabouli.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/6353125924a564f1073f97.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAnd you gotta love the green sauce in the unrefrigerated squeeze bottle. Don&#8217;t worry, nothing could live in there, not even microscopically.<\/p>\n<p>I ordered the barbacoa, because finding out that barbacoa comes from heads only makes it twice as delicious.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/5\/18027832574a564f0953376.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Because my day job is in the food service, I have access to restaurant-grade food products that you miserable mortals can only dream of.
