Watchmen

Been looking at the trailer for the Watchmen movie due out next summer. Despite my best efforts at self restraint, I have been getting excited at the prospect of the movie so I thought I would pull the trade paperback off the shelf and give the original story another read.

I know people have been praising this comic ever since it was released but it really is a beautifully constructed piece of writing and well deserving of its classic status in the modern era. But can the movie live up to the source? Given Hollywood’s track record with Moore’s work probably not but I am willing to settle for a good adaptation without butchering the story too much – V for Vendetta was a good example of this for me and remains the best movie based on a Moore story so far.

So how do I feel about the trailer having read the book again? Well I think the scenes depicted in the trailer look pretty faithful to the comic (I could nitpick about minor design/actor issues but it would be churlish) and there is enough to get the fanboys excited. So I am still cautiously optimistic but realistic enough to realise that there is still plenty of time for the director or the studio to screw it up – let’s hope that they don’t.
