For others who rely on Microsoft, the whole mess is just pathetic.  The <span style=\"font-style: italic\">New York Times<\/span> offers a very good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/09\/business\/09digi.html?pagewanted=1&amp;amp;ei=5087&amp;amp;em&amp;amp;en=279524f88716edb9&amp;amp;ex=1205208000\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">overview <\/a> of the fiasco.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/16\/67335919847d4778fde37b.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<table width=\"90%\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tr>\n<td><span class=\"genmed\"><b>Quote:<\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"quote\">\nMarch 9, 2008<br \/>\nDigital Domain<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">They Criticized Vista. And They Should Know.<\/span><br \/>\nBy RANDALL STROSS<\/p>\n<p>ONE year after the birth of Windows Vista, why do so many Windows XP users still decline to \u201cupgrade\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft says high prices have been the deterrent. Last month, the company trimmed prices on retail packages of Vista, trying to entice consumers to overcome their reluctance. In the United States, an XP user can now buy Vista Home Premium for $129.95, instead of $159.95.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative theory, however, is that Vista\u2019s reputation precedes it. XP users have heard too many chilling stories from relatives and friends about Vista upgrades that have gone badly. The graphics chip that couldn\u2019t handle Vista\u2019s whizzy special effects. The long delays as it loaded. The applications that ran at slower speeds. The printers, scanners and other hardware peripherals, which work dandily with XP, that lacked the necessary software, the drivers, to work well with Vista.<\/p>\n<p>Can someone tell me again, why is switching XP for Vista an \u201cupgrade\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/09\/business\/09digi.html?pagewanted=1&amp;amp;ei=5087&amp;amp;em&amp;amp;en=279524f88716edb9&amp;amp;ex=1205208000\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Continued&#8230;<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"postbody\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a guy who gave up &quot;pay&quot; software many years ago in lieu of Open Source, I find this Vista mess amusing.
