This set of the big and small and odd of comicdom offers many gems. Deciding that I really should share some of these largely forgotten and sometime rare pieces, I&#8217;m taking you through a tour of the more interesting selections.<\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-size: 9px;line-height: normal\">Click on images for full sized versions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/-yE6PJ3KvYP0mPY4oZ13ng?feat=directlink\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/16\/127602349549c1a6e0f0aa9.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 9px;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The New Original Captain Canuck Limited Edition<\/span> No. 1 (Matrix Comics 2001)<br \/>\nArt by <a href=\"http:\/\/theartofdejan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Dejan Ostojic<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\nPremiering in <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Captain Canuck<\/span> #1, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toonopedia.com\/canuck.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Captain Canuck<\/a>&#8216;s original adventures ran for three issues in 1975-76.  Writer Ron Leishman and artist\/co-writer <a href=\"http:\/\/lambiek.net\/artists\/c\/comely_richard.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Richard Comely<\/a> relied on tropes of US action comics while creating one of the most popular Canadian-created superhero.   In 1979, Captain Canuck returned for an additional eleven issues and a Summer Special.  The extraordinary <a href=\"http:\/\/lambiek.net\/artists\/f\/freeman_george.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">George Freeman<\/a> drew most of these issues and are sought after by discerning fans. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comicbookresources.com\/?page=article&amp;amp;id=20323\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">IDW recently announced two forthcoming collections of these issues!<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectionscanada.gc.ca\/obj\/027002\/f1\/nlc002287-v6.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/16\/199911786649c1a6ef2c19a.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 9px;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Captain Canuck<\/span> #11 (Comely Comix) Art by George Freeman<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\nSince the end of Freeman&#8217;s run (and that incarnation of the comic) in 1981, there have been several attempt to relaunch\/ reintroduce the character including by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matrixcomics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Matrix Comics<\/a> in 2001.  The ashcan <span style=\"font-style: italic\">The New Original Captain Canuck Limited Edition<\/span> No. 1 served as a prequel to a proposed series by writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northguard.com\/mbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Mark Shainblum<\/a> and artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandycarruthers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Sandy Carruthers<\/a> (illustrator for the original <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toonopedia.com\/meninblk.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Men in Black<\/span><\/a> from Aircel Comics) that updates the character for 21st century audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/gI_fJSyA17E0o1Fu_hGFxg?feat=directlink\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/16\/195775556649c1a79c89b38.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 9px;line-height: normal\">From <span style=\"font-style: italic\">The New Original Captain Canuck Limited Edition<\/span> No. 1 (Matrix Comics 2001)<br \/>\nScript by Mark Shainblum<br \/>\nArt by Sandy Carruthers<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\nAs far as I can discern, this is the only Captain Canuck appearance created by the duo and the Matrix Comics series never materialized.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While &quot;researching&quot; a recent Nexus Graphica, I had reason to look through my collection of Comics Of Unusual Size.
