The pile, arranged all akimbo, teetered above my head. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51NjrlUfjbL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A recent acquisition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Showcase-Presents-Ambush-Bug-Vol\/dp\/1401221807\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240775172&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Showcase Presents: Ambush Bug<\/span><\/a> proudly sat atop the stack.  This b&amp;amp;w collection features all of Ambush Bug&#8217;s hilarious appearances prior to the most recent mini-series <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Ambush Bug: Year None<\/span>.  I had previously owned much of this book, but hadn&#8217;t read them in years.  They are even funnier now than when they first appeared some 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/reader\/0553577808\/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/514FW633HJL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Directly under the nearly 500 page trade paperback, the mass market of Laurie R. King&#8217;s third Mary Russell\/Sherlock Holmes novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Letter-Mary-Russell-Novels\/dp\/0553577808\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240775590&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">A Letter of Mary<\/span><\/a> lead to much of the precarious nature of the stack.  Like the first two novels, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">A Letter of Mary<\/span> intelligently and skillfully relates the adventures of the elderly Holmes and his young wife Russell.  These novels are among some of the finest Holmes pastiches and come highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/reader\/0375714758\/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51d4BARMT-L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another recent acquisition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chicken-Plums-Marjane-Satrapi\/dp\/0375714758\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240776067&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Chicken With Plums<\/span><\/a> is the latest from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-Persepolis-Marjane-Satrapi\/dp\/0375714839\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;s=books&amp;amp;qid=1240776401&amp;amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Persepolis<\/span><\/a> author Marjane Satrapi.  Brandy read this and insists I read it.  She called <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Chicken With Plums<\/span> &quot;sad and beautiful.&quot;  Brandy really &quot;enjoyed the way she told the story.&quot;  <\/p>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51Wc-AD0H2L._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although I had previously read all of the stories in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sanctified-Chicken-Fried-Portable-Southwestern-Collection\/dp\/0292719418\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240776472&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Sanctified and Chicken-Fried: The Portable Lansdale<\/span><\/a>, I am reviewing select tales for a forthcoming hush-hush project.  More details later&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/reader\/1560979658\/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51IdGlTo00L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sitting under the Lansdale, Fantagraphic&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blazing-Combat-Archie-Goodwin\/dp\/1560979658\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240776807&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Blazing Combat<\/span><\/a> collects all four issues of the groundbreaking Warren comic.  I discuss this volume (and a few others) in the upcoming May 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/graphica01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Nexus Graphica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51QWA7KJQ5L._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Digging even deeper unearths <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Showcase-Presents-Brave-Batman-Team-Ups\/dp\/1401212093\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240777101&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Showcase Presents: The Brave and the Bold &#8211; The Batman Team-Ups, Vol. 1<\/span><\/a> These often strange Bob Haney-scripted self-contained tales make for some enjoyable bedtime reading.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51TLoevis4L._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the base of the stack, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peoples-History-Sports-United-States\/dp\/1595581006\/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1240777291&amp;amp;sr=11-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">A People&#8217;s History of Sports in the United States<\/span><\/a> is a compendium of Dave Zirin&#8217;s sportwritings.  In an alternate vein similar to Howard Zinn&#8217;s classic study <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peoples-History-United-States-Present\/dp\/0060838655\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;s=books&amp;amp;qid=1240777529&amp;amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The People&#8217;s History of the United States<\/span><\/a>, Zirin examines US history though sports.  Read about 1\/3 of the book, which offers some fascinating insights into American culture.<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter realizing the pile wasn&#8217;t going anywhere, I took the books down, re-stacked them, and started my day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Awakening, I nervously eyed the precarious stack of books on my bedside table.
