Book People honcho Steve Bercu’s comments to the New York Times<\/span> regarding book theft are eerily reminiscent to something I wrote shortly after being laid off by Book People, where Bercu was my immediate supervisor.<\/p>\n

From the December 16, 2009 NYT<\/span> piece<\/a>:<\/p>\n

At BookPeople in Austin, Tex., the rate of theft has increased to approximately one book per hour. I asked Steve Bercu, BookPeople\u2019s owner, what the most frequently stolen title was.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bible,\u201d he said, without pausing.<\/p>\n

Apparently the thieves have not yet read the \u201cThou shalt not steal\u201d part \u2014 or maybe they believe that Bibles don\u2019t need to be paid for. \u201cSome people think the word of God should be free<\/span>,\u201d Bercu said. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

Perhaps this is just a coincidence. Bercu could have read my piece when I wrote it and the phrasing stuck in his subconscious.
