I asked Steve Bercu, BookPeople\u2019s owner, what the most frequently stolen title was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bible,\u201d he said, without pausing.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently the thieves have not yet read the \u201cThou shalt not steal\u201d part \u2014 or maybe they believe that Bibles don\u2019t need to be paid for. \u201c<span style=\"color: red\">Some people think the word of God should be free<\/span>,\u201d Bercu said. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"postbody\"><\/p>\n<p>And from my 2002 &quot;Geeks with Books&quot; essay &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/columns\/geeks125.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">The Five Finger Discount<\/a>&quot; (later reprinted in my 2003 book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Geek-Confidential-Echoes-21st-Century\/dp\/1932265066\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;s=books&amp;amp;qid=1262715630&amp;amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Geek Confidential<\/span><\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<table width=\"90%\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tr>\n<td><span class=\"genmed\"><b>Quote:<\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"quote\"> There is a whole other class of bible thief: <span style=\"color: red\">the one who believes the word of God should be free for all to experience<\/span>. I want to get these folks bumper stickers that say &quot;The word of God, not just for terrorists anymore.&quot; What these fools don&#8217;t realize is that the price covers paper, binding, the bookstore rent, employees and a zillion other expenses.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"postbody\"><\/p>\n<p>(I added the <span style=\"color: red\">emphasis<\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this is just a coincidence.  Bercu could have read my piece when I wrote it and the phrasing stuck in his subconscious. I know while I was working there, Bercu was a regular reader of my column.
