The Texas Board of Education has been meeting this week to revise its social studies curriculum. During the past three days, \u201cthe board\u2019s far-right faction wielded their power to shape lessons on the civil rights movement, the U.S. free enterprise system and hundreds of other topics\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u2013 To avoid exposing students to \u201ctransvestites, transsexuals and who knows what else,\u201d the Board struck the curriculum\u2019s reference to \u201csex and gender as social constructs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, \u201creplacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Board refused to require that \u201cstudents learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 The Board struck the word \u201cdemocratic\u201d from the description of the U.S. government, instead terming it a \u201cconstitutional republic.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
