It\u2019s too bad Kirby didn\u2019t live long enough to see his epic Fourth World reviewed<\/a> in The New York Times<\/span>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to know what a teenager would make of this. But Kirby was writing just as much for himself. He was 53 when he undertook the Fourth World, and a veteran of World War II. But as Evanier points out, and as is evident throughout this book, Kirby was deeply inspired by the young generation that was renouncing war around him. His understanding of the youth movement was perhaps idiosyncratic (in Kirby\u2019s world, the \u201cHairies\u201d built their perfect society in a giant missile carrier they called \u201cThe Mountain of Judgment\u201d). But they too were forging a new world; and the pleasure he clearly took in their efforts seems to have balanced the bouts of Orion-like rage. In one moment, Highfather of New Genesis turns to one of the young boys in his care. \u201cEsak,\u201d he asks, \u201cwhat is it that makes the very young \u2014 so very wise?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTee hee!!\u201d Esak replies. \u201cIt\u2019s our defense, Highfather \u2014 against the very old!!\u201d<\/p>\n

This is probably the only passage in the English language containing the words \u201ctee hee\u201d that has actually moved me.<\/p>\n
