{"id":3414,"date":"2008-07-20T03:57:11","date_gmt":"2008-07-20T03:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/2008\/07\/20\/elric-in-the-new-york-times-2\/"},"modified":"2008-07-20T03:57:11","modified_gmt":"2008-07-20T03:57:11","slug":"elric-in-the-new-york-times-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/2008\/07\/20\/elric-in-the-new-york-times-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Elric in the New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Sunday, July 20 <span style=\"font-style: italic\">New York Times<\/span>, Dave Itzkoff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/20\/books\/review\/Itzkoff-t.html?_r=1&amp;amp;ref=books&amp;amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">latest Across the Universe column<\/a> features Michael Moorcock\u2019s seminal creation Elric and the recent repackaging <a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/article.php?id=4045\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Elric: The Stealer of Souls<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style: italic\">Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melnibon\u00e9<\/span>, Volume I). <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<table width=\"90%\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tr>\n<td><span class=\"genmed\"><b>Quote:<\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"quote\">What is stranger still is that the world Elric was born into did not necessarily need him. Moorcock was 21 years old when he introduced the character in the June 1961 issue of a British periodical called Science Fantasy. Ray guns and rocket ships were rapidly overtaking swords and sorcery as the preferred pulp subjects of the day, and many of Moorcock\u2019s lasting science fiction accomplishments \u2014 including his novella \u201cBehold the Man\u201d; his radical, satirical Jerry Cornelius novels; and his immensely influential editorship of the sci-fi magazine <span style=\"font-style: italic\">New Worlds<\/span> \u2014 were several years away.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"postbody\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Three things leaped out at me from the piece.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">1)<\/span> Itzkoff clearly has done some reading about Moorcock and of his work.  Knowing that, it\u2019s very shocking that he writes  &ldquo;also C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien \u2014 titans of fantasy who seemed to be obvious influences on him.&rdquo;  Moorcock was <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">influenced by the works that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">originally<\/span> influenced the two authors<\/span> as well as the writings of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mervyn_Peake\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">Mervyn Peake<\/a> and Robert E. Howard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">2)<\/span> What the hell is that hideous image in the article?  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/bb\/weblogs\/upload\/16\/12242096614882af40c6e3c.jpg\" border=\"0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\nWhy would any one choose that objectively inferior piece over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnpicacio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">John Picacio<\/a>\u2018s beautiful cover or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/article.php?id=3935\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"postlink\">incredible interior art<\/a>?
