As I have for the past seven years, I attended the festival. Sadly, I was only there on Saturday, though that didn&#8217;t stop me from getting some goodies, visiting some friends, and hopefully make some new ones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/Staple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3015 aligncenter\" alt=\"Staple\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/Staple-192x300.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/Staple-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/Staple-657x1024.jpg 657w, https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/Staple.jpg 1609w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the show&#8217;s pleasant surprises was the unexpected appearance of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmcm.com\/tmcm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shannon Wheeler<\/a>. As long time readers know, Shannon and I go way back (chronicled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/columns\/graphica285.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/columns\/graphica384.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and other places) so it was nice to catch up. We discussed the success of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1603090983\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1603090983&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thegeecur-20\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>God Is Disappointed in<\/em> You<\/strong><\/a>, the Too Much Coffee Man beer (<a href=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-frc3\/t1\/p296x100\/1619572_543141005802173_1870555750_n.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">yes, really!<\/a>), his kids, and other stuff in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Then Shannon made me a very generous offer, <strong>he gave me the original of a Too Much Coffee Man strip!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/TMCM-original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3016\" alt=\"TMCM original\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/TMCM-original-718x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/TMCM-original-718x1024.jpg 718w, https:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2014\/03\/TMCM-original-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I already owned a page from Wheeler&#8217;s first book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/5769598-children-with-glue?from_search=true\" target=\"_blank\">Children With Glue<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which happened to be the first book I edited and the title that TMCM was created to promote. This was a very welcome addition to my meager art collection.<\/p>\n<p>This year beyond just the usual visiting friends and to get an idea of the goings on in the Austin pop culture\/DIY art communities, there were two artists I wanted to meet.<\/p>\n<p>Austinite <a href=\"http:\/\/robharrell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Harrell<\/a>&#8216;s graphic novel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1603090754\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1603090754&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thegeecur-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Monster on The<\/strong><\/em><strong> Hill<\/strong><\/a> charmed it&#8217;s way onto my list of the years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/columns\/graphica405.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ten best graphic novels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Best known for the syndicated strips\u00a0<b><i>Big Top<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b><i>Adam@Home<\/i><\/b>, Rob Harrell makes his first foray into the full length graphic novel format with the humorous\u00a0<b>Monster on the Hill<\/b>. In Harrell&#8217;s fantasy vision of 1860s England, a monster terrorizes every town. Each unique creature serves as a source of civic pride and financial windfall as the terrifying monsters attract a lucrative tourist trade. Save for Stoker-on-Avon whose resident, less-than-impressive dragon Rayburn, suffers from depression. With the help of the eccentric Dr. Charles Wilkie and the fearless street urchin Timothy, the morose monster must overcome his foibles before a menace destroys the town. Recalling the best of\u00a0<b><i>Bone<\/i><\/b>, Harell&#8217;s charming caricatures, funny asides, and creative fight sequences propel the exciting tale. Truly living up to the all ages moniker,\u00a0<em><b>Monster on the Hill<\/b>\u00a0<\/em>should thrills all adventure-lovers, from 8-80 and beyond.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I found Harrell but a few feet away from Wheeler at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topshelfcomix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top Shelf<\/a> table. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1616552026\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1616552026&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thegeecur-20\" target=\"_blank\">first collection<\/a> of this new hero made it to\u00a0my list of the years\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/columns\/graphica405.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ten best graphic novels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Collecting initial tales of Francesco Francavilla&#8217;s brilliant neo-pulp,\u00a0<em><b>The Black Beetle Volume 1: No Way Out<\/b><\/em>\u00a0harkens back to the origins of the 20th century comic book hero genre while firmly planting a foot in the post-nihilistic 2010s. Clad all in black save for red eyepieces and a red chest insignia, the mysterious Black Beetle battles Nazis, super villains, and even the police on the streets of Colt City, an obvious paean to Will Eisner&#8217;s Spirit. Drawing inspiration from The Shadow, The Spider, and their ilk plus artists such as Eisner, Alex Toth, and Darwyn Cooke, Francavilla produces a dazzling new addition for the long heroic legacy of the pulp.\u00a0<em><b>The Black Beetle Volume 1: No Way Out<\/b><\/em>\u00a0successfully introduces a dynamic new hero for the 21st century. All this leaves the reader craving more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since Dark Horse only sent me the digital copy, I bought the physical book and had the extraordinary Francavilla\u00a0sign it. Patterson<\/a> for what seems like forever and since 2011 he&#8217;s published three novels including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/098384481X\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=098384481X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thegeecur-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Devil&#8217;s Hand<\/em><\/a>, winner of\u00a0Kindle Book Review\u2019s 2012 \u201cBest Indie Horror Novel\u201d award.
