Same thing happened last year when I visited with artist <a title=\"Stuff received 11\/16\/11- Austin Comic Con edition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/2011\/11\/17\/stuff-received-111611-austin-comic-con-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mark A. Nelson for the first time in nearly 15 years<\/a>. This time I found\u00a0<em>Weird Business<\/em> contributor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boyinthewater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Miran Kim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Miran illustrated Poppy Z. Brite&#8217;s story &#8220;Becoming the Monster.&#8221; Poppy was the first contributor to the book, turning in her script before Joe R. Lansdale and I even had contract for the book. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/vault\/geeks243.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Loads more behind the scenes of\u00a0<em>Weird Business<\/em><\/a>) At the time Miran was the primary cover artist for Poppy&#8217;s novels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1971\" style=\"width: 347px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2012\/10\/Becoming-the-Monster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1971\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1971\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2012\/10\/Becoming-the-Monster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"337\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Art by Miran Kim from <em>Weird Business<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though I couldn&#8217;t recall if I had met Miran previously, she had vague memories of meeting two guys from Mojo at a New York convention. Neither me nor Mojo Press publisher Ben Ostrander ever went to a NYC con. After a few minutes, we figured it must have been at one of the San Diego conventions.<\/p>\n<p>We caught up on things. Miran was in town visiting her brother. She showed off some of her recent works including the new graphic novel\u00a0<em>27 Graves<\/em>, written by Steve Niles.\u00a0Remarkably, the gorgeous work has yet to find an American publisher.<\/p>\n<p>In the duh-department, Miran revealed she doesn&#8217;t like her work from\u00a0<em>Weird Business<\/em>. Really, what artist does like their work from 20 years ago?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.boyinthewater.com\/images\/index.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The other old acquaintance renewed never actually worked with me though I wish he had. The legendary <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernie_Wrightson\" target=\"_blank\">Berni Wreightson<\/a> made his first of what will surely be many\u00a0appearances at the Comic Con. Berni moved to Austin back in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I first met him at the 1997 San Diego Comic Con, shortly after\u00a0<em>Weird Business<\/em>\u00a0came out, when he asked me why he wasn&#8217;t include in the book. Dumbfounded and flattered, I told him that Joe and I didn&#8217;t know how to contact him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1975\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2012\/10\/bwfrank-hc-fc2-wrk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1975\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1975\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionsf.com\/revblogs\/geekcurmudgeon\/files\/2012\/10\/bwfrank-hc-fc2-wrk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from Berni Wrightson&#8217;s <em>Frankenstein<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Wrightson has long been one of my artistic heroes. His work in <em>Creepy<\/em> and\u00a0<em>House of Mystery<\/em> informed much of my earliest works. Without him, I doubt\u00a0<em>Weird Business<\/em> would exist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I chatted with him and his wife Liz about Austin and comics. Berni happily signed my copies of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccomics.com\/graphic-novels\/dc-comics-classics-library-roots-of-the-swamp-thing\" target=\"_blank\">Roots of the Swamp Thing<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookdb.com\/issue.php?ID=91474\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Frankenstein<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookdb.com\/issue.php?ID=177376\" target=\"_blank\">The Reaper of Love<\/a><\/em>.
