Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi Omen by Christie Golden

Promo copy:

The Jedi Order is in crisis. The late Jacen Solo’s shocking transformation into murderous Sith Lord Darth Caedus has cast a damning pall over those who wield the Force for good: Two Jedi Knights have succumbed to an inexplicable and dangerous psychosis, criminal charges have driven Luke Skywalker into self-imposed exile, and power-hungry Chief of State Natasi Daala is exploiting anti-Jedi sentiment to undermine the Order’s influence within the Galactic Alliance.

Forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is on a desperate mission to uncover the truth behind Jacen’s fall to the dark side–and to learn what’s turning peaceful Jedi into raving lunatics. But finding answers will mean venturing into the mind-bending space of the Kathol Rift and bargaining with an alien species as likely to destroy outsiders as deal with them. Still, there is no other choice and no time to lose, as the catastrophic events on Coruscant continue to escalate. Stricken by the same violent dementia that infected her brother, Valin, Jedi Knight Jysella Horn faces an equally grim fate after her capture by Natasi Daala’s police. And when Han and Leia Solo narrowly foil another deranged Jedi bent on deadly destruction, even acting Jedi Grand Master Kenth Hamner appears willing to bow to Daala’s iron will–at the expense of the Jedi Order.

But an even greater threat is looming. Millennia in the past, a Sith starship crashed on an unknown low-tech planet, leaving the survivors stranded. Over the generations, their numbers have grown, the ways of the dark side have been nurtured, and the time is fast approaching when this lost tribe of Sith will once more take to the stars to reclaim their legendary destiny as rulers of the galaxy. Only one thing stands in their way, a name whispered to them through the Force: Skywalker.

Part I

In a Dull Fugue State: A review of In My Sleep

For Moving Pictures, I reviewed the indy thriller, In My Sleep.

Quote:
Marcus (Philip Winchester) suffers from parasomnia, a disorder in which the afflicted engages in activities as though he or she is awake, but with no later memory of their actions. He sleepwalks through life meeting strange women for one-night-stands and frequently awakening naked in his car. After receiving a series of threatening phone calls from an angry forgotten lover, Marcus joins Sexaholics Anonymous in search of some control. While at a meeting, he befriends fellow addict Gwen (Abigail Spencer), a recently divorced doctor who works at a local hospital. One morning, Marcus finds himself in his bed covered in blood. Terrified, he finds out that Ann (Kelly Overton), wife of his best friend Justin (Tim Draxl) and one of Marcus’s recent sleep-fueled conquests, was brutally murdered. “In My Sleep” follows Marcus’ attempts to piece together the facts behind her death and resolve his apparent involvement. Desperate for answers, Marcus enlists the aid of Gwen and his neighbor, L.A. Times photographer Becky (the charming Lacey Chabert) in his quest.

Quote:
Even though the film introduces new concepts to the thriller genre, a substandard, hackneyed script slaps the story flat. Straining believability, every action serves only to justify the movie’s main conceit. Wolf relies on the lamest kind of pop psychology to develop his characters.

Quote:
With a telegraphed plot and stereotypical conclusions, “In My Sleep” struggles to achieve the level of a low-budget 1990s Lifetime movie. Wolf’s sophomoric effort will put moviegoers into a somnolent state.

John Coulthart & Into the Media Web

John Coulthart blogged about his designs for the forthcoming Savoy publication Into the Media Web, a collection of Michael Moorcock’s nonfiction work.

Quote:
Here at last is the book I spent a good part of last year designing. Into the Media Web is a huge volume as befits a huge talent, 720 pages of Michael Moorcock’s non-fiction spanning fifty years of his career from his days writing for sf and fantasy fanzines, through to journalism, reviews and articles for major newspapers and magazines.

This being about design, Coulthart shares some of his inspired work.

Quote:
It was the cover design which dictated the look of the interior. The book’s title comes from a prescient article of Moorcock’s from the late 1960s concerning the increasingly interrelated nature of modern media. Accompanying this was a small diagram (below) which showed some of the connections Moorcock was discussing.

Quote:
Inside the book a grey Tube line begins on the half-title page and snakes its way through the entire volume, marked with the names of writers or locations encountered along the way. For the title spread I created an illustration of the author intended to resemble the tile mosaics one finds on the walls of the Underground stations in the city centre. The starting point was a photo from the mid-Seventies which appeared inside the very first Savoy Moorcock book, Sojan in 1977.

In the piece, he delves even further into the design.

Coulthart does supply this bit of sobering news.

Quote:
Savoy Books haven’t announced a price yet but it’s going to be about £45 (about $70 American –RK) since it’s another limited edition and weighs a ton.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu

Promo copy:

National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Award-winner Charles Yu delivers his debut novel, a razor-sharp, ridiculously funny, and utterly touching story of a son searching for his father . . . through quantum space-time.

Minor Universe 31 is a vast story-space on the outskirts of fiction, where paradox fluctuates like the stock market, lonely sexbots beckon failed protagonists, and time-travel is serious business. Every day, people get into time machines and try to do the one thing they should never do: change the past. That’s where Charles Yu, time travel technician—part counselor, part gadget repair man—steps in. He helps save people from themselves. Literally. When he’s not taking client calls, Yu visits his mother (stuck in a onehour cycle, she makes dinner over and over and over) and searches for his father, who invented time travel and then vanished. Accompanied by TAMMY, an operating system with low self-esteem, and a nonexistent but ontologically valid dog named Ed, and using a book titled How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe as his guide, Yu sets out, and back, and beyond, in order to find the one day where he and his father can meet in memory.

Wildly new and adventurous, Yu’s debut is certain to send shock waves of wonder through literary space-time.

Dragongirl by Todd McCaffrey

Promo copy:

Young Fiona, rider of the gold queen Talenth, has returned from the past, where she and a group of dragons and riders fled so that the wounded could heal from their previous battles with Thread and the younger dragons could safely grow to fighting age. Gone only three days, yet aged more than three years, Fiona is no longer a child but a woman prepared to fight against the Thread that threatens to destroy her world.

Fiona’s life takes a pivotal turn when a shocking tragedy thrusts her into a position of authority. Now she finds herself leading weyrfolk who have a hard time trusting a senior Weyrwoman who is both young and an outsider.

But even greater challenges lie ahead: Thread is falling and there are too few dragons to stem the tide. Many have died from the recent plague, and even with the influx of newly mature dragons from the past, the depleted fighting force is no match for the intensifying Threadfall. Fiona knows that something must be done, and what she proposes is daring and next to impossible. But if her plan succeeds, it just might save them all.

With a cast of familiar characters from previous Pern novels—including Lorana, who sacrificed her own queen dragon so that all the dragons of Pern would have a chance to survive, and Kindan, the harper Fiona has loved her whole life—Dragongirl is another triumph for Todd McCaffrey, and a riveting new chapter for the Dragonriders of Pern.

Wolf’s Cross by S. A. Swann

Promo copy:

S. A. Swann continues to reinvent the werewolf myth in this fantastic new novel set in the medieval world of the celebrated Wolfbreed. Like its predecessor, Wolf’s Cross is unafraid to cross boundaries and break taboos to tell an unforgettable story of romance and adventure that will forever change how you think about werewolves.

Maria lives a simple life in a small Polish village, working for the lord of the nearby fortress. Motherless since birth, Maria has been raised by her father and stepmother. Around her neck she wears—as she has always worn—a silver crucifix, to protect her from the devil. Or so her father tells her.

But when a contingent of badly mauled Teutonic knights, including a handsome and gravely wounded young man named Josef, ask for succor at the fortress, Maria’s quiet and comfortable world shatters. For the knights are Wolfjägers, an order dedicated to the extermination of werewolves, and Maria, unknowingly, is one of the creatures they hunt. Only the crucifix about her neck prevents her body from changing into a lethal killing machine.

When Maria meets Darien, a wolfbreed bent on exacting a terrible revenge on humans, she will learn the truth about herself, and find her loyalties—and her heart—torn in two.

But this is a border crossing like no other, a journey as psychic as it is physical, a seeing of the unseen. With Ul Qoman detective Qussim Dhatt, Borlú is enmeshed in a sordid underworld of nationalists intent on destroying their neighboring city, and unificationists who dream of dissolving the two into one. As the detectives uncover the dead woman’s secrets, they begin to suspect a truth that could cost them more than their lives. What stands against them are murderous powers in Beszel and in Ul Qoma–and, most terrifying of all, that which lies between these two cities.

The Dervish House by Ian McDonald

Promo copy:

It begins with an explosion. Another day, another bus bomb. Everyone it seems is after a piece of Turkey. But the shockwaves from this random act of 21st century pandemic terrorism will ripple further and resonate louder than just Enginsoy Square.

Welcome to the world of The Dervish House; the great, ancient, paradoxical city of Istanbul, divided like a human brain, in the great, ancient, equally paradoxical nation of Turkey. The year is 2027 and Turkey is about to celebrate the fifth anniversary of its accession to the European Union; a Europe that now runs from the Arran Islands to Ararat. Population pushing one hundred million, Istanbul swollen to fifteen million; Turkey is the largest, most populous and most diverse nation in the EU, but also one of the poorest and most socially divided. It’s a boom economy, the sweatshop of Europe, the bazaar of central Asia, the key to the immense gas wealth of Russia and Central Asia.

Gas is power. But it’s power at a price, and that price is emissions permits. This is the age of carbon consciousness: every individual in the EU has a card stipulating individual carbon allowance that must be produced at every CO2 generating transaction. For those who can master the game, who can make the trades between gas price and carbon trading permits, who can play the power factions against each other, there are fortunes to be made. The old Byzantine politics are back. They never went away.

The ancient power struggled between Sunni and Shia threatens like a storm: Ankara has watched the Middle East emerge from twenty-five years of sectarian conflict. So far it has stayed aloof. A populist Prime Minister has called a referendum on EU membership. Tensions run high. The army watches, hand on holster. And a Galatasary Champions’ League football game against Arsenal stokes passions even higher.

The Dervish House is seven days, six characters, three interconnected story strands, one central common core–the eponymous dervish house, a character in itself–that pins all these players together in a weave of intrigue, conflict, drama and a ticking clock of a thriller.

The Stuff of Legend Book 1: The Dark Written by Mike Raicht & Brian Smith Art by Charles Paul Wilson III

Promo copy:

The year is 1944. As Allied forces fight the enemy on Europe’s war-torn beaches, another battle begins in a child’s bedroom in Brooklyn. When the nightmarish Boogeyman snatches a boy and takes him to the realm of the Dark, the child’s playthings, led by the toy soldier known as the Colonel, band together to stage a daring rescue. On their perilous mission they will confront the boy’s bitter and forgotten toys, as well as betrayal in their own ranks. Can they save the boy from the forces of evil, or will they all perish in the process? The Stuff of Legend is a haunting and ultimately redemptive tale of loyalty, camaraderie, and perseverance.

This edition includes a brand-new story featuring the Colonel’s war journal, maps, sketches, and other original material!

I wrote in Nexus Graphica:

Quote:
After the Boogeyman kidnaps a young boy, his toys mobilize to save their beloved master. The metallic Colonel leads Maxwell the teddy bear, Percy the piggy bank, the wooden duck Quackers, the Native American Princess, Jester from the jack-in-box, the angel Harmony, and the real puppy Scout into the feared closet. Upon entering the Boogeyman’s domain, toys shake their artificiality and become the things they represent (Maxwell an actual bear, Quackers a real duck, Princess a flesh and blood Indian, etc.) In an amazing cross-pollination of Toy Story and Wizard of Oz, Raicht, Smith, and Wilson introduce a fascinating land inhabited by forgotten toys and fueled by the forces of evil. Newcomer Wilson’s lush work ideally supports this imaginative triumph.

The Last Days of American Crime Issue #2 Written by Rick Remender Art by Greg Tocchini

Promo copy:

With only a few days left to pull off the last great crime in American history, the tension mounts as secrets and double crosses are revealed. While trained killer Kevin Cash goes to retrieve an important component to the heist, his girlfriend Shelby seduces Graham Brick as they deal with their own set of problems. Left-for-dead gangster Enrique is looking for revenge along with two mysterious cops that are following their every move. With Shelby kidnapped by Enrique’s Mexican gang, can Graham rescue her before time runs out?

For my Sf Site column Nexus Graphica, I wrote this about issue 1:

Quote:
For this violent, near-future thriller, Remender creates a reality in which, due to ultra-stringent anti-terrorism legislation, the United States has slipped into a cesspool of vice and corruption. Amid the chaos, career criminal Graham Brick plans one more big heist. Though the background story borders on absurd (the government plans to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts), Remender wisely focuses on the criminal elements, conjuring the best of the late Richard Stark with a fascinating supporting cast. While his painted work is pleasing to look at, Tocchini falters as a storyteller, often causing confusion. Even with these distractions, The Last Days of American Crime offers an intriguing, nihilistic view on the crime thriller.

Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost Issue #3 by Ian Endinton Art by Stjepan Sejic

Promo copy:

From the mystical city of Shambhalla to the ends of the Earth comes a tale of magic, mystery and the motivations of power. It is the world of Ala ad-Din, better known as ALADDIN.

Thief, gambler, liar and cheat, Aladdin’s reckless soul falls under the eye of the sorcerer Qassim, who has spent his life scouring the sands for the Dreaming Jewel. This lost relic of shattering power will enable Qassim to steal the magic of the Djinn of the Lamp and reshape the world in his own malicious design. But to do so, he requires a mystical ability carried within Aladdin’s blood…power that not even Aladdin himself knows about. An epic adventure that twists the classic saga into dark, unexplored territories with multi-Eisner nominated writer Ian Edginton!

My Nexus Graphica review of issue 1:

Quote:
Veteran scribe Edginton expertly relates the oft-told tale of Aladdin. This first issue explores the hero’s misbegotten youth as a thief on through his acquisition of the famous lamp. Unlike many of his contemporaries, painter Reilly uses his impressive skills to enhance rather than obfuscate Edginton’s script. Beyond the Dune-inspired sandworm sequence, Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost offers a welcome, fresh perspective of the famed adventurer.

Comic Book Realities

For my latest Nexus Graphica column over at SF Site, I provided a survey of live action movies/ TV shows derived from comic books.

Quote:
Not that long ago, live action movies based on comics were a scarcity. As a kid in the 70s, a few made-for-TV movies based on Marvel properties littered the airwaves. Spider-man, Hulk, Dr. Strange, and Captain America all enjoy varying degrees of success. Not to be outdone, DC supplied the highly popular Wonder Woman series. Buck Rogers even staged a comeback. These films and series produced in the days before cable and digital effects, all looked inferior even to the current dismal crop of Saturday night originals airing on SyFy.

Quote:
During the early 80s, horror, science fiction, and action films dominated my film existence with only one notable comic book movie. Wes Craven, best-known at that point for the schlockfests The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, brought the cult classic Swamp Thing to the big screen. My then 14-year-old self walked away from Swamp Thing (1982) with only one lasting memory: a nearly topless Adrienne Barbeau. I’ve managed to see the movie several times since and though not terrible, in terms of quality, the film lags far behind the extraordinary Superman.

Quote:
Tank Girl (1995) stopped my obsession. I realized about half through this wretched movie, that I didn’t even like the comic, so why was I there? I swore to be more judicious in my choices.

My history continues up until the present day. Check the entire piece at SF Site.
