zine panel

compare the zine panel this year (left to right: sherlock, steve wilson, grant kruger) with . . .

the zine panel last year:

when people weren’t paging through zines, there actually was some talking. grant, this year’s fan guest of honor and the gentleman with the horns in the first picture, talked about fandom in the ‘fascist state’ (his words) of south africa and told me the definition of ‘relaxicon.’

Readings

Mark Finn, from his Robert E. Howard biography.

Rick Klaw, from a bio-in-progress of his "perverted" grandfather. (Or so they called him)

(Note how Klaw has higher hand elevation than Finn)

Jessica Reisman, from a story that’ll appear in Dark Wisdom next year.

Joe Lansdale, from his sick imagination.

And So Begins Day 2 (Belatedly)

[ Happy Mood: Happy ]

Ah, nothing like rolling into the Con at half past noon after a late night of being on a zine panel all of two people attended, trail mix at the Apollo Con after-party, a morning of cartoons and Costco with the kid, a feeling of guilt for missing Roberson’s comic book panel but not quite willing to be the one guy who slips in halfway through … and then being greeted by men in kilts.

Why do men in kilts always stand like that?

if you must bring your hideously deformed child to a con, be sure to keep it locked in its stroller.

is viewing violet crown radio player’s audio performance of ‘king kong’ like listening to the movie ‘godzilla vs. megalon?’ let’s run with that simile.

we met anthony tollin in the con suite. after pulling his fingernails, he grudgingly revealed the information that he had been the colorist for batman and the green lantern for fifteen years (he left the green lantern at the same time hal jordan passed on the ring). currently he owns the rights to publish doc savage and the shadow.

you will note that although it is gauche to wear the Tshirt of your own band while playing a show as a part that band, if you’re hawking your own book, then all bets are off.

chris nakashima-brown read a selection from the story he wrote for the robert e.howard anthology which is coming out for the world fantasy convention. it’s a remake of REH’s ‘tower of the elephant’ but set in modern-day iraq. how good was it? imagine that you found out that jan svankmajer had done a remake of star wars and you got a sneak preview. that’s how good it was.

mark finn tells it all. due to a scheduling error, mark finn served as the convention toastmaster (not pictured). he spent the entire 90 minutes ragging on rick klaw.
