Small Favour – A Quick Review

[ Happy Mood: Happy ]
[ Currently: Waiting for Trick or Treaters ]
WOW!!!!! Jim Butcher delivers another solid entry in his Dresden Files series that had me stying up way too late to finish it.

This tenth book finds Harry having to pay back a favour to Mab, Queen of Darkness. She wants him to rescue Johnny Marcone, who has gone missing.

The page turning mission pulls in the Summer Court, the Denarians, the Knights of the Cross, Thomas, Mouse, Bob, the Archive, Kincade, Marcone’s thugs and even Mister the Cat. Harry also learns more about the Black Council.

Butcher is one of the few authors who keeps his series fresh and isn’t afraid to kill off or permamently maim major characters

Can’t wait for number eleven.

Eagle’s Conquest – A Quick Review

[ In Love Mood: In Love ]
[ Currently: Guess ]
Simon Scarrow has turned in an excellent second entry in his historical fiction series about the Roman legions. By focussing on the three main characters of Cato, Macro and Vespasian, Scarrow gives us a look at how a legion works, as well as Roman warfare and politics. He also weaves in Vitellius, the sneaky, backstabbing tribune for colour.

This is a riproarinng, fun piece of literature. Cato’s development as an optio and man is particularly good. This is a particularly gritty, realistic and engaging book. Go get it.

Predator: South China Sea by Jeff VanderMeer

The hunters come from all walks of life. Each has come to the island for personal reasons, some secret, some deadly. But when the encampment’s owner, ex-Khmer Rouge Colonel Rath Preap, finds the fences cut and his security men missing, it’s clear that the game has turned. And as the hunters battle for survival, they discover there is another creature out for blood… an adversary that has faced death on a thousand worlds – a Predator with an unstoppable lust for conquest!

A new VanderMeer novel is always an event worthy of celebration, regardless of subject.

And speaking of VanderMeers:

Plum Lucky – A Quick Review

[ In Love Mood: In Love ]
[ Currently: Breastfeeding my son – Situation Normal ]
This is another one of Janet Evanovich’s "Between the Numbers" Books. This one finds Stephanie trying to track down her wacky Grandma Mazur who has apprently absconded to Atlantic City with a bagful of cash. The cash belongs to a leprechaun who is being chased by the mysterious Diesel. Stephanie has to get her grandma and the money before the gangsters, who are after both, find them.

Thia is better novel than the previous entries in this mini series. It is funnier and more believable. Worth the time.

I wonder which holiday she is turning her attention to next. I predict Easter.

25 Arguments for the Elimination of Copy Protection

While more of an overview of the many problems with copy protection, Harry McCracken offers some fascinating evidence and arguments against the practice.

Quote:
I used to think that the name of the Free Software Foundation’s DefectiveByDesign.org anti-copy protection campaign was a tad hyperbolic. These days, I’m not so sure. So much copy protection has caused so many headaches for so many people who just want to use the products they’ve bought for legitimate purposes that it’s hard to come to any conclusion but this one: Copy protection by its very definition makes the products it’s applied to worse. Almost all of it is basically disrespectful to paying customers; almost none of it truly prevents pirates from doing what they will.

The soon-to-released Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) can be pre-ordered on disc! Although the entire operating system will be available for download on October 30, I find it useful to have the system disc as well. The discs are free and come with Live CD so you can test drive the OS before installing it.

I’ve been relying on some flavor of Linux OS for over five years and it just keeps getting easier and easier to use. I now run an entirely Open Source computer and I can do just about anything I want or need. No expensive Microsoft or Mac products on my computer. With most Open Source created with older machines in mind, barring any breakage, my hardware will be good for at least another five years!

Plus, it gives me more money to spend on books!
