I have the glow in the dark set of these dice but have seen the other sets as well. These are some of the coolest dice ever made for human beings for gaming. _________________ +-+-+-+

I cannot decide which I like better, the white, or the glow-in-the-dark!
Recommendation for a man who really shouldn't buy $40 dice?
Wait! I see the white ones are only $20... This makes it far too easy a choice... |

The glow in the dark actually do glow that toxic radioactive green. It is cool, but makes you afraid to roll them because of potential skin cancer. _________________ +-+-+-+

Did you notice they're all on backorder? These things are popular. _________________

The only question remaining is, do I go with the white or the black ($40, even for glow-in-the-dark, is a bit much)?
And do I get this (in mahagony) or this (in black) lovely box to keep them in?
Also, starting to play a rpg again would be a good place to begin, yes?
Any suggestions for a former D&D, Traveller, Star Frontiers, T&T, and Gamma World player? I'm tempted to return to one or more of these classics, but also looking to branch out, and I've been way out of touch with the market for years. |

Well, there's always GURPS, which is kinda old-school, but which has kept very much alive over the years, and is essentially an evolution of T&T. I think they are the main people publishing new Traveller material, too. Also, their Transhuman Space series is utterly fascinating--where I live, I will never have a chance to run a game in that universe, but I buy the books anyway because it's just so much fun to read them. And they have supplements for pretty much anything you might want to play: fantasy, horror, spy, SF, supers, cinematic martial arts, whatever.
Then of course there's D&D, which I've found impossible to avoid if I want to game with my pals, but I've gone on and on about that elsewhere. The d20 system is so pervasive--it's used for the current iteration of the Star Wars RPG and many many others--that you practically have to learn d20 eventually anyway, and the basics are easy to pick up. I'm sure there's a new d20 Gamma World, as well. (checking) Oh, here it is. Oddly enough, it's published by White Wolf.
Although you didn't mention any horror games, I have to push Call of Cthulhu, which is based on the old-school Basic RolePlaying system which was based on Runequest, and it's still one of the simplest and most elegant game systems out there. Plus it's just fun watching your character lose a Sanity roll, go nuts, and open fire on his buddies while screaming "You'll never eat MY pineal gland, you Commie bastards!!!" But I can understand that not everyone is into that kind of thing.
My current fave is World of Darkness. The core rules are easy and cheap and can be used to play any sort of game, although White Wolf is certainly pushing the supernatural horror angle. I've seriously thought of using them to run a Star Trek campaign, a Wild West campaign--whatever, they would work fine. There's no need to buy the Vampire and Werewolf and Mage books, although I did and liked Mage enough to run a campaign, which is going great. (My players just relocated the bones of the ghost of a murdered little girl so that she'll haunt the temple they live in, rather than haunt a local park.)
And I just received Wild Talents, a mind-blowing superhero game. One of the writers is our very own Shane Ivey. It is visually gorgeous, the rules are ingenious once you get your head around them (one die roll instantly tells you initiative, whether you hit, where you hit, and how much damage), and the setting is amazing. (Full disclosure: I am a volunteer web monkey. I do not receive any money from Shane Ivey.)
Just as computer games have free demos you can download and try out, many RPGs these days offer quickstart rules and free intro adventures. I linked to those for Call of Cthulhu above. So try before you buy. _________________

Well, obviously just looking at my icon you know I am not going to agree with SuperDave about Call of Cthulhu.
We've been doing some D20 Modern, Year of the Zombie stuff. It has been fun but it is helped by the fact the guy running the game has a real passion for the material. The system is sort of almost irrelevant. I'm a GURPS head too but I can never get anyone to play it. I'd also like to try out Elric or Hawkmoon but that will never happen.
*sigh*
So many games... _________________ +-+-+-+

The new edition of Elric is called Stormbringer--they got tired of people coming up to their booth at cons and asking, "What's this Eric game?" _________________
