It has indeed been awhile. But Chuck has just arrived in Japan! I've DVRed the first-season premiere, so now I can watch it in big-screen (well, bigger than my iPod screen) goodness. _________________

Now that Dexter has wrapped up its season, and The Venture Bros. are pulling a BSG*, it'll be nice to have Chuck back. Or I could get back to catching up on Dr. Who and Torchwood.
* 2-parter season with a big break in the middle. _________________

The latest of this year's Doctor Who specials has been the best so far of this year's Doctor Who specials.
But yes, Chuck will be welcomed back. _________________

I've caught the first ep of the new season and about half of the second so far, and the verdict is in: I LIKE IT. Okay, it's not perfect. Chuck and Sarah being on the outs is surprisingly uncomfortable to watch, and I still just do not buy that Chuck would not have run off with Sarah without a second thought. And I will miss those tiny little wonderful doses of Julia Ling (I was so sad to not see her face in the opening credits), but come on, Anna was never going to stay with Morgan if he returned to the BuyMore. (I'm betting she makes a guest appearance at some point, with a new boyfriend, driving Morgan insane...which is pretty easy to do, of course.)
But I'm liking the new irregularly competent Chuck, and how the new abilities just mean he gets tons more responsibility dumped on him. Chuck and Casey going toe-to-toe boxing at the end of the ep with "Eye of the Tiger" playing was a hoot--especially knowing that Chuck just might win. It's always neat to see Casey letting himself be the decent guy he really is deep down.
And the surprise death of [NAME REDACTED--but seriously, don't read threads about TV shows if you don't want spoilers] actually made me go "whoa!" and then feel very happy, because I've wanted to see that guy get shot in the eye for a long, long time.
And Morgan and Chuck finally living together--whoo! Ellie and Awesome are still living in the same apartment complex, so they'll be around, but it'll be nice to have less of Ellie's concerned-big-sister routine. Small doses of that go a looong way. Same for Awesome: too much screen time for him lessens his awesomeness. _________________

I kind of understand Chuck's illogical decision: He's just a really good guy. He has an established history of doing what he thinks is the right thing as opposed to doing the thing that could make himself happier. He's often put his own neck on the line to try to save others. One of the funniest scenes of this series was when he was heard begging for the torture to stop, and then it was revealed that someone else (a stranger to Chuck as well as a rival for Sarah's affections) was being tortured.
I don't know if these parallels are intentional on the part of the show's creators, but Chuck is very much like Peter Parker in the strength of his character. _________________

True dat. I hadn't seen the bit where Chuck explains his reasons for Sarah while he's trapped in the room with the gas and everything.
But now I've seen up through Ep 3 and whoa! I take back what I said about less of Awesome--he was nicely awesome. I love Casey as the Angel of Death, too. But image that will stay with me: Sarah in tight nurse outfit and granny glasses, holding a big gun. I wish I could find a picture online--it's almost as sexy as this.
And then the end: AWESOME! NOOOOOO!!! _________________

OK, so in "Chuck vs. First Class," Chuck gets a new potential girlfriend who to all appearances is NOT a spy of some sort. And her name is Hannah (not Anna, as I kept hearing it). And she's played by Kristin Kreuk. And she's going to join the Nerd Herd, apparently.
What are the makers of Chuck doing?? First, they ditch Julia Ling, who was the coolest of the Nerd Herd (other than Chuck and Morgan, of course). And now they replace her with...a half-Chinese actress who played Chun-Li in that movie about Chun-Li that nobody went to see. Not to put Kristin Kreuk down--I mean, I guess she might be a better actress...it's hard to tell, really, as Julia Ling never really got to act much (except when they had her play out awful stereotypes of ABC (American-Born Chinese) girls: she's actually a genius, she only works at the BuyMore because she's rebelling against her uber-traditional parents, she an expert at kung fu, yadda-yadda), but dang it, I miss my gothy, punky, wise-cracking, pint-sized, nerdy, non-skinny-model-looking Anna! And now they're replacing her with a hot-model upgrade!
GAAAA! I liked the original! I just always wanted some good writing for her!
Sigh. Well, I hope Ms. Kreuk does well. But I'm afraid that every time I see Hannah in a BuyMore uniform, I'm going to be missing Anna. _________________

I never bothered to see the Chun-Li movie, and even though I absolutely hated the soap-opera-like dialogue Ms. Kreuk was getting in her last few years on Smallville, I think she was adequately skilled in delivering it.
But I don't imagine this will be a long-term situation. Sooner or later, Chuck's feelings for Hannah are going to conflict with his feelings for Sarah and/or his new status as a "real" spy. _________________
