Just finished Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog, which had been recommended to me many times over the years. It just happened to be on the bookstore shelf when I was looking for something non-heavy-literature to read. Quite a good read.

Highly recommend Fugue State by Brian Evenson, for the short story lovers out there.

Most of my free time now involves adapting two kittens to the new environment of our home.

Just started Carmen Dog, by Carol Emshwiller. Slender, fable-like novel about a mysterious plague of women turning into animals and animals turning into women. This should be a good one for the upcoming "Women in SpecFic" podcast.

Just started a tasty little morsel called The Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert V.S. Redick. Pirates, spies, sailors, political intrigues... oh, did I mention pirates?

Just finished it--it was slim, like I said. Great read, gave me an idea for a paper for the Thought in Science and Fiction conference that will be held in Ankara, Turkey, a year from now.

What I am reading right now is a collection of short stories by Chris Beckett called The Turing Test. Like with most collections the standard is up and down but worth a read. Reminds me a bit of PKD in that most of the stories seem to be about individuals disconnected from the world around them in some way.

I am halfway through but I am going to put it on hold because I have just picked up the latest book by my favourite Scottish author Iain Banks. It is called Transition and should be interesting as it is being sold in the UK as an Iain Banks novel but in the US it will be an Iain M. Banks novel (usually reserved for his out and out SF works).

I've begun the 1000+ page opus that is "Under The Dome," by Stephen King. So far, I'm excited that it's engaging and entertaining, if a little familiar. I'm actually daring to hope he doesn't kill off one of the characters I've taken a liking to.

In the bathroom I am back to Buffy and Philosophy

On my MP3 while I am clenaing and cooking (and CBC radio is playing some of its lesser programming) 10 Cent Plague. (which I am uploding the next part to RIGHT NOW!)

Just finished "Under The Dome." At 1K+ pages, like "IT" was, I impressed myself by getting it read in 7 days, just like I did with "IT" so many years ago.

Personal accomplishments aside, I really liked this book. It was pleasing to be surprised by some of the events that caught me off guard in the story. As I neared the end, I feared the denouement would disappoint, but I was not let down. It was a smooth, enjoyable ride, with a few rollercoaster bumps thrown in for good meaure, and many very likeable characters. I'll read it again, for sure.

Next up is Charlie Huston. I hear he's got a new one out there.

I've read several reviews of Under the Dome, and they are unanimous in saying things along the lines of "This is like reading a Stephen King novel back in the days when I wasn't tired of Stephen King novels." So yeah, I guess I'm going to have to check it out eventually.
