"Don't you lose that chin, you Skrull girls."
Kirby Krackle's music would be at home on alternative radio, but their topics are not about how sad they are.
Instead, they sing about superheroes, comic books, and video games.
My favorite track is "Marvelous Girls," about ladies from Latveria, Wakanda, and other Marvel Universe locales. The song takes particular, hilarious issue with the wings on Sub-Mariner's ankles, amid singing about the girls.
The rest of the CD doesn't quite reach the stratosphere of "Marvelous Girls."
Some of the tracks are funny, some are straight-up rock songs. And "Zombie Apocalypse" is calypso. Calypso! That's new. It's good stuff.
"Counting on You" is a love song from innocent civilians to Superman and Batman. It's syrupy-sweet.
Every band must have a ballad, for the ladies in the house tonight. Kirby Krackle's is called "Naked Wii."
Four of the 10 tracks are about video games, five are about comics or superheroes (the other one is the zombie one). The game songs are not my favorites.
If a band names itself after Jack Kirby, I would expect more superhero songs. But even with their focus divided between superhero stuff and video games songs such as "Up, Up, Down, Down," they still came up with an awesome song about the Thing.
I know artists must be free, free like the wind, to make their art. I can't force Kirby Krackle to make only songs about superheroes. I can't force them into my box. That is what The Man would do. The corporate Man, I mean. Not Stan "The Man" Lee. He would dig this.
My second-favorite Krackle song isn't on the CD (it's listenable at the Kirby Krackle site). "Ring Capacity" is about Green Lantern. The lyrics include the Green Lantern oath. The Green Lantern oath. In song form. It totally rules. (Here's a live performance.)
Someday nerdy music will be all there is. Then the whiners on alternative radio will really have something to be sad about.
I look forward to hearing more from Kirby Krackle. You will love "Marvelous Girls" and "Ring Capacity" or you should turn in your card. It's good for your nerdiness.
You can listen to the CD free at the Kirby Krackle site. Their stuff is on iTunes and you can
