At the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin, Texas, a showing of Star Trek: Wrath of Khan turned out to be a surprise premiere of the new Star Trek movie.

Leonard Nimoy was there.

The big news for RevolutionSF is we were not!

Sure, most of you reading this were not either. In Alabama we did not get even the opportunity to not see it. So I write this all out of jealousy.

But a gaggle of RevolutionSF writers live in that area. They could have gone, but did not, because it was just a showing of Wrath of Khan. We've seen Wrath of Khan. It rules.

But it's not surprise movie and Mr. Spock!

Rick Klaw decided not to go to the showing at the last minute, and then this happened. He is most likely kicking himself in the boo-tay even now.

Jayme Blaschke: "The Wife and I stayed home with the kids. I downloaded some photos from Peter Beagle's reading we attended the day before. The Wife did some editing of bridal photos she'd taken recently for her photography business Lisa On Location. Then we put the kids to bed and sat down to watch season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the ones where Xander's love spell on Condelia goes horribly wrong, and Oz discovers that he's a werewolf in addition to Dr. Evil's son. I take solace in that the new Trek seems universally hailed as significantly better than those last few sucking-hind-teat Next Gen films. Gads, Nemesis made The Shat's Final Frontier look good by comparison."

Steve Wilson: "I helped my five-year-old bury our cat's most recent prey, then we identified the victim with his new Central Texas bird guide. After some Legos and putting him to sleep with a bit of Roald Dahl's "The Twits," I decided to tweet about the bird thing on Facebook, because I'm hard up for material."

Matthew Bey: "I was busy watching Maniac Cop 2, the best movie EVER."

So one time, out of all the thousands of old-movie nights around the world, a surprise nerd-related movie busts out. This sets the bar impossibly high for every other old movie showing.

More people will come, thinking it'll be a surprise new movie instead. But they will get nothin', and have to like it.

Oh, Khan. Once again, from hell's heart you stab at us.

RevolutionSF could quote all day from Wrath of Khan for this byline. So let's get started! RevolutionSF writers enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Later, as they grow, follows madness and death.
