I have no words. Except "Spelin stuf rong iz gud."
The Sci Fi Channel announced it will change its name to Syfy, because it sounds the same and it's a trademark they own. In other words, they are creating a problem they did not have, and then fixing it.
In a New York Times story, the channel's president David Howe said, "If I were texting, this is how I would spell it."
Dude. Syfy is only one letter (and a space) less than Sci Fi. If you really need the split second that you save by typing one less letter (and a space), then you need some vacation days.
The new slogan is "Imagine Greater." Pushy. I'm trying! I'm trying! Oh, God! I can't imagine any greater!
We will still watch what's on the channel, if it's something we like. Other than select shows that we might watch, we have no Daggit in this fight. That's because unlike other niche channels that claim and embrace their audience, Sci Fi Channel pushes us away. For its "16-year heritage," this channel's runners have wanted it to not be what its name says it is.
The Sci Fi Channel's producers do not want it to be a niche channel. But other channels are already not niche channels. Sci Fi can't be USA or Spike, because USA and Spike already are. Just like every nerd who thinks people will make fun of his nerdiness, the Sci Fi Channel won't fly its geek flag. But nerds have money, I promise. I just bought a Star Wars t-shirt.
I wonder if this happens at all the other niche channels. Because Sci Fi Channel is the only one that whines about it.
In other news, Comedy Central is changing its name to Komudee and CNN is changing to Snuh.
Press Releases Rule!
Now let's have fun with the silly-ass double-speak in the press release!
I hope they say synergy or going forward or nonlinear digital platform..
"The new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure."
I prefer that all my entertainment be imagination based. Instead of, say, boring.
"Ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms."
Whoo whoo! Ding ding ding!
"Syfy more clearly captures the mainstream appeal of the world's biggest entertainment category." By obscuring and misspelling the well-known name of that category.
"Global lifestyle brand." Sounds sexy! Tell me more!
"Aggressive marketing campaign." I like those more than the the half-assed marketing campaigns.
