2008 has proven to be a banner year for me in the geek world. Lots of wonderful things happened, some of which I actually got to experience. Here are the best.
The Public Library in my town has been my savior this last year. Its collection includes graphic novels
Watchmen,
V for Vendetta and
Fables, allowing me to catch up on some of my reading. They also have audiobooks, so I always have something to listen to while we do chores. This saves me from listening to stupid call-in shows, which is better for all of us. Trust me. The best part is it all is free. Except for the late fees.
Damn you, late fees!!!
He has been around forever, but I really got tuned in to him in 2008. With his cartoon site of Bad Gods and his alt text at Wired, Lore became one of the must sees of the year for me. Honestly, if I wasn't already married to the most wonderful man in the universe, I would wed this man and bear his children.
There are only a couple of blogs outside of the ones on RevolutionSF that I follow. Joseph is one of them. He is a writer/producer of the
Stargate world and actively blogs his restaurant visits and work day. Joseph also runs a monthly online book club where he picks a sci-fi, a fantasy and a horror book for his readers to discuss. He is frequently gets the author of said books involved, so it is fun. And his photos of his food rival those of our oun
Matthew Bey.
Thanks to the power of the Internet, I have known
Jennifer Pelland now for fourteen years. I have watched her grow as a writer and have been privy to some of the funniest fiction stuff you have ever seen. She released her first collection of short stories,
Unwelcome Bodies and it is awesome. Joseph even featured it in a book club (see above). You should go read this because it is good fiction and because you want to help one of us fufill a dream.
Living Social is a website that allows users to track their books, albums, television shows, and, yes, even beer. They also have a Facebook app and webblog widget so your list follows you. They give recommendations based on your collection. This is where I track books I have read and want to read. Truly addictive and helpful. Now if they could improve their feedback forum, I would be a happy camper.
Oh Joss Whedon, before you were tempted away by Fox, you produced a gem of entertainment. Full of your trademark wit and humor, there are also wonderful performances by Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day. There are songs begging to be sung along with at my next con. Plus, you dared to circumvent Hollywood and make original entertainment. You may have fired the opening shot in the battle that will redefine how we watch TV.
The fourth season of the new incarnation came to us this year, and WOW. It met my expectations, if not surpassed them. Doctor Donna taught the Doctor to be human again. The writers also did a great job tying Donna into the Doctor Who mythology. The episode “Turn Left” had ton of examples. "Journey's End" showed us the master stroke with Donna's ultimate fate. And the best part was, she never fell in love with the Doctor. That is so refreshing after Martha and Rose. But she would have shagged Captain Jack if given half the chance.
2008 gave me the chance to talk Skype to Skype with RevSF staff that I have been emailing with for years. And it was as cool as I thought it would be. You should all go download the podcasts and listen. Cause I am much younger looking in the Podcast.

My husband and I were blessed with the addition of a child to our previously DINK life. The boy arrived in April and they are not kidding when they tell you that children change your life. The cat is learning that one particularly well.
But not to fear, we took the boy to all sorts of geeky events, specifically his first con at three months. We even took pictures of him with tons of cosplayers. The best is of him in his Apple of Mommy's Eye onesie, in the arms of Darth Vader, who was flanked by stormtroopers. Pretty much everyone in the hallway whipped out their cameras for that one.
