The Howard the Duck movie is set for DVD. Never did I believe I would bear witness to it. Obviously, George Lucas has frozen over.
At long last, the infamous 1986 live-action duck movie will join George Lucas' other terrible decisions on DVD.
It's also for for free on Hulu. It's like the Renaissance!
Howard the Duck originated as a Marvel comic by Steve Gerber in 1973. It was a subversive, sarcastic, crazy-ass comedy adventure with a talking duck. So they did a movie, and they took all that out.
Except for the talking duck.
It bears the triviatic badge of Marvel's very first theatrical movie. It would be 14 years before Marvel got another one done, with X-Men.
Which is still less time than it took George Lucas to go from Return of the Jedi to Phantom Menace.
Now, of course, Marvel movies are somewhat successful and reasonably popular, but Howard the Duck was first. There are no takesie-backsies.
I don't remember whether it was good or awful. I just remember Howard taking a bath with Lea Thompson, and being hurt by that.
But the movie's renown isn't that it got the Marvel comic wrong. Its ill repute is because it showed that George Lucas, the Raiders of The Lost Ark guy and the Empire Strikes Back guy could make a bad movie.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! George Lucas! Making a bad movie? Can you imagine? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Oh, here come the tears.
