Reuters reports the death of Samuel Z. Arkoff. He died of natural causes at age 83. His best-known work included The Amityville Horror, which scared the crap out of me, I Was A Teenage Werewolf, which didn't, and the Beach Blanket series starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, which did.

Variety reports a great quote from Arkoff: "Thou shalt not put too much money into one picture . . . and with the money you do spend, put it on the screen. Don't waste it on the egos of actors or nonsense that might appeal to highbrow critics."

His company American International Pictures distributed Mad Max, Blacula, and Black Caesar, and lots of horror movies. Early in their careers, he worked with Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Ivan Reitman, Brian De Palma, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Peter Fonda, and Melanie Griffith.

He executive-produced, and son Louis Arkoff is producing, Creature Features, five new feature films for Cinemax based on Arkoff's monster movies from the 1950s. The first debuts Dec. 4.
